Ceramic raw materials for heavy clay ceramics are usually extracted in surface mining. The key extraction machines include bucket chain and bucket wheel excavators. Bucket chain excavators cannot be used for selective extraction, homogenization of the raw material is, however, possible. These usually rail-based machines offer high capacity but are not easy to move. The generally track-mounted, more manoeuvrable bucket wheel excavators, on the other hand, can be used for selective extraction.
