In shaping or forming, the ceramic body is given its shape. Extruders and deairing machines are certainly the most commonly used shaping machines in heavy clay ceramics. Dies are used to shape the clay body into a wide range of shapes, including backing/common bricks, facing bricks or brick slips. The extruded clay is cut in length by a cutter. Roofing tiles are extruded as clots and then finally shaped on roofing tile presses, like revolver and turntable presses. Specially shaped bricks are manufactured in small unit numbers on accessory presses. Hand-mould brick presses are used primarily for facing bricks. Here clots of clay body are filled into moulds and are given a special surface finish.
